As I mentioned on Back to School Night, I recently put five math
apps on each of the lower school ipads. This will allow students to
practice their math skills in small groups, as a math center or after they
finish their math work in class. The apps primarily focus on
building skill with computation. Being facile with math facts will help
students be able to solve increasingly complex mathematical problems without
being bogged down by basic computation.
Many of these apps have different levels and allow you to choose
between addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Consequently,
they are useful for a variety of ages and grades. At some point this year I
will be doing a parent workshop that covers a wider variety of apps as well as
website that are useful for math practice.
If you have a app ready device, such as an ipad or iphone, feel
free to check out these apps at home:
Numbler- Just like
scrabble but with numbers.
King of Math and King of Math Jr.- A variety of math topics are covered from computation to
fractions and geometry.
Deep Sea Duel- A fun problem solving and computation game where you are up
against a quick thinking octopus.
Math Bingo- Bingo using addition, subtraction multiplication and division
Match Up Math- Match up pairs of equivalent equations using addition,
subtraction, multiplication or division.
Also, one website worth checking out is math-play.com It had
tons of math games related to a wide variety of subjects. http://www.math-play.com/
Enjoy exploring!
