Bernoulli's Principle - More Fun with Air!

Today was a very active day in science class as we further explored Bernoulli's principle.  Bernoulli's principle explains that pressure within a fast moving volume of air decreases with the speed of the air.  The faster air travels over a surface, the less time it has to push on that surface.  Last science class, we explored this by blowing under tents of paper and under sheets of paper propped up on books.

The students were surprised that the paper bent inward rather than outward or flying off the table!

This time, we took to the hallways!

First we walked slowly along the hallway pressing very hard on the wall.  It was easy to press really, really hard!

Next we tried pressing on the wall running as fast as we could.  It was much harder to press on the wall while running!  The faster that they move along the wall, the less time they have to push on the wall.  Just like air pressure!

Next it was time to explore windbags!  If you try blowing up these eight foot long bags by holding the bag close to your mouth, like a balloon, it could take a LOT of breaths.  But, if you hold your mouth several inches from the opening you can fill it with one breath!  How does that happen?

Bernoulli's principle, of course!  When you start blowing into the bag you are creating an area of fast moving, low pressure air.  Air from the higher pressure areas rushes into the low pressure spot you created.  One strong blow picks up enough surrounding air to fill the bag!

Music - writing rhythms, 3 part rhyme, hero song and skating!

After returning form winter break we have been focusing on rhythm and pitch. We have been creating our own rhythms and singing or clapping them for the class. We have been working in small groups and have worked by ourselves on the smart board.

A new warm up song that we sing at the beginning of class is called Oo a lay lay. This is a call and response song, we have a different leader for each class.

1st grade has been talking about their heros and so we decide to learn a song about heros! We are still working on learning all the words

After learning the rhyme went then transfered the rhythm (or the words) onto small hand drums, large hand drums and bongos

We talked about the movements that Peter made in the snow and acted out those movements to music.

We then listened to Skaters Waltz by Emile Walteufel and skated around the room using paper plates are our shoes. When the music stopped the children had to make a frozen shape!
