First Grade Begins Studying Poetry

We began studying poetry this week by reading several poems aloud. We then talked about what makes a poem different than a story. We also read the poem Green Grass & Dandelions by Margaret Wise Brown, which inspired us to create our own poem together and do some individual work.

Dandelion Sunset

Never has the grass been so green,

bright and green and growing

Never has the dandelions been so yellow.

Connect the stars in the sky

and see a constellation in your eye.

Restless giant elephant

Clouds in the grass

Dandelions

Yellow, green, tan, orange, purple,

pink and turquoise.

Never has the grass been so green

Bright and green and growing.

We discovered that we could use the first line in Margaret Wise Brown's poem, "Never has the grass been so green",  to help us create our own poetic sentences.

"Never has the ___________________ been so_______________."

We created our own lines of poems using sentence strips...

and then we illustrated them!
